Description
Goddess Glory is a contemporary interpretation of the sacred Mata ni Pachhedi tradition of Gujarat, a distinctive folk-art form historically created as portable shrine textiles for the worship of the Goddess. This artwork preserves the traditional storytelling format and symbolic vocabulary of the art form while bringing it onto canvas through acrylic painting.
At the center of the composition is Ma Ambika, majestically riding a tiger beneath a temple-like shrine. Her commanding presence and multiple arms represent divine strength, protection, and spiritual power. The blue shrine surrounding the Goddess creates a strong focal point and emphasizes her sacred presence.
The composition is populated by devotees dressed in traditional attire, performing rituals, offering prayers, and celebrating the Goddess. Birds appear among the devotees, creating a lively connection between human devotion and the natural world.
Several important motifs traditionally associated with Mata ni Pachhedi are incorporated into the artwork. Lord Ganesha appears as an auspicious symbol of beginnings and is traditionally placed beside the Goddess. The Sun and Moon occupy the upper corners, representing the cosmic order and eternal presence. Trees symbolize growth, nature, abundance, and the flourishing of life under the Goddess’s divine blessings.
The artwork follows the characteristic tri-colour visual scheme associated with Mata ni Pachhedi, while the yellow-ochre background introduces a contemporary dimension. Traditional borders, symbolic figures, flora, and fauna are arranged in a storytelling format, allowing the viewer to discover layers of cultural and spiritual meaning throughout the composition.
Created in acrylic on canvas, this artwork brings together devotion, decoration, storytelling, and divine energy. It is a contemporary celebration of Gujarat’s rich folk-art heritage while preserving the distinctive visual language and sacred symbolism of Mata ni Pachhedi.
